Infrastructure is difficult to represent in its entirety: on screen, it is typically shown either as background/setting (which usually goes unnoticed) or through its failure (which sets the plot in motion). Infrastructure is the ground upon which life inhabits and moves. Water here, as the source of life, indicates both these sides of infrastructure—its appearance in “wholes,” as the setting of a place, and in “holes,” where the presence of water marks a rupture. Water itself is a slippery element: it offers both the conditions in which we can stay afloat and those in which we drown.
In this screening series held at Tyumen’s old water tower, the films intensify what ordinarily goes unnoticed, denaturalize the normal flow of things, and suggest that the lack—the hole—is more than just a negative space for water to fill: it indicates an opening within an incomplete whole.
