What the series is about:

This Advanced English series is a practical, interactive space for participants to strengthen their advanced speaking and communication skills through storytelling, humor, persuasion, debate, and professional communication. Sessions focus on using English naturally and confidently in real conversations while developing the flexibility to communicate with different people, audiences, and situations.

The program will include the following topics and learning activities:

• The Art of Storytelling — organizing engaging stories, setting the scene, building suspense, and using natural transitions
• Storytelling Through Different Perspectives — exploring point of view, tone, interpretation, and how the same story can change depending on who tells it
• Humor in English — understanding sarcasm, irony, wordplay, exaggeration, and cultural differences in humor
• The Art of Persuasion — building strong arguments, supporting opinions, and agreeing or disagreeing diplomatically
• Debate Without the Drama — practicing rebuttals, counterarguments, challenging questions, and defending different points of view
• Professional Communication — navigating requests, feedback, disagreements, misunderstandings, and direct vs. indirect communication
• Think on Your Feet — responding to unexpected questions, speaking without a script, and communicating confidently in spontaneous situations

Why it is useful:

Advanced speakers often know what they want to say but may still need practice communicating naturally, spontaneously, and appropriately for different situations. This series gives participants plenty of opportunities to speak, experiment with language, take risks, and become more flexible communicators.

It supports participants who want to:

• tell stories that are clear and engaging
• understand humor and cultural nuances in English
• express and defend opinions confidently
• disagree without creating conflict
• communicate more effectively in professional situations
• respond more naturally when they haven't had time to prepare

About the Specialist: 

Marie van Romburgh is an English language educator with extensive international experience across Botswana, Myanmar, the Czech Republic, Costa Rica, and the United States. She has taught ESL in diverse K–12 and adult-learning environments and has led teacher training workshops in the United States and around the world including Haiti, Cambodia, Thailand, South Africa, Poland, and elsewhere. From 2014–2017, she was an English Language Fellow and full-time instructor supporting academic and cultural programming and served as an English language specialist in 2022. Marie holds a BA in English Literature from the University of South Carolina and an MA in TESOL from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Her specialties include English for Specific Purposes, university-level academic English, Educational Technology, and teacher development.  

Certificates: Earn an e-certificate from the Regional English Language Office!

To qualify for an e-certificate, you need to attend at least 5 out of 7 Zoom sessions.
