A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, all held together by gravity. Earth is part of a galaxy called the Milky Way, but did you know there are possibly hundreds of billions of other galaxies in the universe? You couldn’t possibly learn them all, but if you join this fun and interactive lecture, you’ll have enough knowledge about galaxies to amaze your friends!
Raised in Monterrey, Mexico, Irene Vargas-Salazar completed her undergraduate degree at Louisiana State University where she earned a Bachelor’s in physics with a concentration in astronomy and a minor in French. She is currently pursuing a PhD in astronomy from the University of Michigan. With areas of expertise including astronomy, astrophysics, photometry, optical astronomy, star formation, extragalactic astronomy, stellar astrophysics, and galaxy evolution, doctoral student Irene Vargas-Salazar is currently studying massive binaries, which are pairs of the biggest stars found in the universe.
