Meet a Poet: María Fernanda

About the poet: María Fernanda Chamorro is an award-winning poet. Awarded the Norma Elia Cantú Award in Creative Writing, her poetry explores the intimacy of sisterhood, the anchor of intergenerational coexistence, and grief. She appeared at The National Mall and Memorial Parks, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, Hamburg/Germany’s NDR Kultur, Greece’s Rosemary’s House, The Ecuadorian American Cultural Center, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, a co-presenter with The U.S. Embassy of Suriname, and more.

María Fernanda is a published contributor to The Library of Congress. María Fernanda is a recipient of literary appointments from The National Endowment for the Arts (2021), The Academy of American Poets, The Arizona Commission on the Arts, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She is an Inaugural Academy of American Poets Poetry Coalition Fellow. She has served as The Black Artists and Designers Association Secondary Advisor at Arizona State University and a guest speaker for Lincoln Center Education as an Artist in the Industry. She is a Two-Time Best of the Net Nominee.

María Fernanda partners with performing arts centers, museums, public libraries, and more nationwide to support their programming and cultural landscapes. María Fernanda is a Callaloo fellow. She is the founder of four independent programs, including a poetry garden, where Black literary artists and horticulturists discuss their creative and historic connections to gardens.
