Inside the Ring: A Conversation on Wrestling and Coaching

Wrestling is recognized as the world’s oldest competitive sport. With a history reaching as far back as ancient Greece and Rome, it continues to be popular in places like Russia and the US. While rules and styles differ from region to region, wrestling is a common language connecting athletes and coaches from all backgrounds. As fans look ahead to the World Wrestling Championships this fall and to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the sport becomes a prominent tool for fostering cultural exchange. 

About the Speakers:

A 30-year veteran of the sports and education industries, Bryan Thompson currently leads the Hammerhead Consulting Group, a firm specializing in the rapidly evolving field of international sports diplomacy. His extensive experience within local, state, and federal organizations offers unique and unparalleled insight into developing partnerships and building capacity. Among his multifaceted background as a project manager, technology leader, and head varsity wrestling coach, Thompson has implemented partnerships for K-12 education initiatives to enhance STEM and technology learning opportunities, and fostered cultural sports exchange programs. A Registered Athletic Director (RAA) through the National Athletic Administrator’s Association (NIAAA), Thompson is also the founder of Hammerhead Wrestling Systems, LLC, a private wrestling academy and club. Founded in 2011, it serves the simple purpose of developing student-athletes for success in life.

Cornell Robinson is a highly respected, championship-caliber wrestling coach who served as the Head Wrestling Coach and Director at the prestigious Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School. Widely recognized for his "athlete-centered, strategy-driven approach," Robinson has built a legendary reputation for developing elite pipeline talent and preparing high school wrestlers for the intense physical and mental transitions of NCAA Division I competition. Beyond tactical execution on the mat, Robinson holds a Master’s degree in Education. He actively collaborates with top-tier NCAA programs, including managing summer training clinics for Penn State wrestling program, to ensure his athletes maintain elite academic and leadership standards.
