As English increasingly serves as a global lingua franca, language teachers must prepare students to communicate effectively with speakers of diverse English(es) across cultural contexts. This workshop explores how translanguaging pedagogy and World Englishes integration can assist in preparing students for real-world communication. Through interactive demonstrations of classroom activities that align with contemporary understanding of English as a global language, attendees explore translanguaging activities that leverage students’ full linguistic repertoires, develop materials incorporating diverse English varieties, and design communication-focused tasks that prioritize intelligibility over native-like accuracy.
Who is it for? This workshop is particularly relevant for TESOL practitioners seeking to move beyond traditional monolingual, native-speaker-centric approaches to embrace more inclusive and globally-oriented teaching practices.
Speaker: Dr. Rachel Toncelli is a lecturer at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where she teaches English language courses to international students. Previously, Rachel worked in TESOL teacher education at Rhode Island College and served as the Director of English Language Learning at Brown University. She has also done extensive educational consulting with K-12 school districts in the USA. Most recently, her scholarly interest has centered around exploring how English language educators develop critical AI literacy. Rachel is a co-recipient of the 2024 Ron Chang Lee Award for Excellence in Classroom Technology, awarded by TESOL International Association, for her collaboration on a blueprint for educators to productively explore the integration of GenAI into their language teaching. Her most recent publications include “A love-hate relationship: Exploring faculty attitudes towards GenAI and its integration into teaching,” “Exploring applications of ChatGPT to English language teaching: Opportunities, challenges, and recommendations,” and Artificial Intelligence, Real Teaching.
